1911 Pinehurst Golf Club Valentine's Tournament Captain's Cup Runner-Up Sterling Silver Medal
Showcased in this lot is an early (1911) Sterling Silver Valentine's Tournament Captain's Cup Runner-Up tournament medal won by H. (Herbert) Yuile on February 11th. Oakmont CC founder H.C. Fownes and 3-time US Amateur winner Walter Travis also played in this St. Valentines Match-play tournament, in the first division for the President's Cup, where the latter was presented a similar in design winner's gold medal! The highly intricate, time-period crest of Pinehurst Golf Club presents in excellent condition on the front along with Pinehurst Country Club, Pinehurst NC also in shallow relief. Yuile, with his wife, returned from Montreal to Pinehurst for the tournament and month of activities such as socially, leas luncheons, dinners and bridge as it was in-season, as announced in the Pinehurst Outlook newspaper on the day of the tournament February 11, 1911. In the Fifth Division, or Captain's Cup, Herbert Yuile beat Henry Sanford by default in the first round, Duval Dunne decisively in the second 7 and 6, and J.A. Maxwell 2 and 1 in the semi-finals prior to falling to G.A. Place in the finals 4 and 2 as reported by the Pinehurst Outlook newspaper on February 18th. The reverse border of this medal is outlined by a ribbon-tied harebell wreath. Carries STERLING marking on bottom edge, as depicted in the accompanying lot photos.
