1910 Winchester Country Club (MA) Golf Dual Handled Trophy
In Maine a small group of residents formed the Winchester Golf Club in 1897, and leased land near Winter Pond in Winchester. However, by 1902, much of the membership was looking for a more accommodating location. On May 5, 1902, the Winchester Country Club was formally incorporated and initiated the purchase of about 60 acres of the old Swan Farm. The founders adopted a seal, representing a crescent moon and temporary shelter (on the trophy), as an ode to Nanepashemet and his wife (Native Americans in this area – from 1600s) Winchester Country Club’s course opened in 1903 with a nine-hole layout by Alexander Findlay (Scot, designed many other early US courses, some called him “Father of Golf in America”. Six years later, the club consulted with Donald Ross to add bunkers, and thus began a relationship that would last into the 1930s, spanning the height of Ross’ prolific career as a golf course architect. Active club. 4 1/4" x 3" x 4"
