1908 Rules of the Game of Golf Approved by R&A of St Andrews Booklet
This golf rules book was published by E. C. Henderson & Son at the University Press in St. Andrews for those enacted September 1908. It has a very nice graphic cover featuring long nose golf clubs framing the title. There is an inscription on the front inside cover “ With Norman Salmans’ Compliments Jan 1909.” In addition to the rules of golf it also contains (a) recommendations for local rules, (b) form and make of golf clubs, (c) a section on golf etiquette, (d) special rules for match play competitions, (e) rules for three ball, best ball and four ball matches, and (f) special rules for stroke competitions.
The book is filled with interesting statements. Under form and make of golf clubs it states that the rules of the golf committee will not sanction any substantial departure from the traditional.. including a head which does not contain any mechanical contrivances including springs. Under etiquette there is an early plea to arrest slow play-- it states “players who have holed out should not try their putts over again when other players are following them” .
This 32 page book will make a most interesting “conversation starting” addition to your golf library." Condition is fair to good, with pages 21-24 (two back-to-back consecutive center pages) loose from binding as shown in the sixth photo.
