1907 'Open Golf Champions' by Artist Michael Brown Sepia Photogravure Incl. Vardon, Morris, Taylor, Braid - Framed
This sepia photogravure on green card mount was an advertising effort for J. Player & Sons in 1907 appropriately titled 'Open Golf Champions.' Artist Michael Brown depicts past champions Tom Morris, J. H. Taylor, Harry Vardon, J. Braid, and then current 1907 Champion, Arnaud Massey. Both the swinging (action) shots and closeup portraits are artfully done for each featured champion. It is almost a large-form card in essence, promoting the same tobacco company. The subjects and their victories until that point are running around the encompassing green matting, with Braid yet to win his 4th and 5th Opens and Vardon his 5th and 6th, similar format to the calendars of the day which would have the advertising and months on the outer fringe of centered artwork. James Michael Brown (1853-1947) a land and seascape artist whose passion for Golf was transposed to his art. Brown's work was showcased in the Life Association of Scotland calendars just after the turn of the 19th century. This artwork is complimentarily matted and framed to 24" x 19 1/2" and condition is depicted in the accompanying lot photos.
