1907 Pinehurst CC North & South Amateur Runner Up Secretary's Cup Three Handle Sterling Silver Trophy
This is a very early Pinehurst trophy from the first decade of its most important tournament, The North & South Amateur Championship! It is from only the seventh annual North & South Amateur held on April 4, 1907, the professional North & South Open starting a year later in 1902 and hosting their 6th annual tournament in 1907. This elegant and highly prized three handled trophy bears the detailed famous Pinehurst shield in shallow relief with the extensive inscription surrounding it, including its worthy recipient nearly 120 years ago George W. Robeson. Robeson would finish runner-up in 1907 for the Secretary's Cup hardware here. Top amateur of his day and one of the finest in golf history, Walter Travis, won Pinehurst's North and South three times in 1904, 1910 and 1912. Robeson was not only the successful golfer in his family, with Fillmore K. Robeson winning The North & South Amateur Championship in 1915 and Irving S. Robeson in 1918. The cup was finely crafted with the significant precious metal hallmark of “STERLING A 4627 - 2 5/8 PINT” found below the anchor stamp and two others. It is very hard to find Pinehurst trophies as early as this, less than a decade after golf was first played at the resort. 500 grams. 6" x 8" x 7"
