1905 Algonquin Golf Club 'St Andrews By The Sea' Tea Pot Trophy

From humble beginnings that began in 1899, a time in which nine holes were planned out in Webster Groves, Missouri and the local railroad station 'clubhouse' to receiving the moniker 'St Andrews By The Sea' this unique tea pot trophy is proof of Algonquin Golf Club's journey. Right away the local professionals, men and women alike, took a liking to Algonquin's set up and compared it to The Old Course. In 1901 it would be rerouted due to property restrictions, disbanded shortly thereafter and opened again on new land that was once the former Jackson Farm. This new 1903 design was laid out by Chicago Course Designer Tom Bendelow of Medina GC and Olympia Fields fame. After that initial plan, Old Tom Morris' apprentice Robert Foulis of Scotland was brought in to 'construct the 9-hole course and tend to the greens.' Morris and Foulis were said to walk the course together in the evenings, Foulis a sponge for the information Morris taught him about everything from clubmaking to architecture. It was again with the open in 1904 compared to St Andrews due to Foulis' work and as engraved on this 1905 Algonquin Golf Club trophy considered 'St Andrews by the Sea.' It remains a top golf club in the St Louis area today. This tea pot contains four 'gemstone' additions for added flair and heightened design. In addition to the club name and moniker are the engravings 'Handicap Prize and August 29th, 1905 Won By TL McWilliams' in stylized, flowing font. Pewter hallmarks are found on the prize's underside. Please inspect the accompanying lot photos for a detailed condition report. 8"
