1904 'Ladies Golf' Book by May Hezlet
This 1904 book represents a golf book first as it is the first book published in Britain specifically as an instruction book for women. May Hezlet was the Open Ladies champion in 1899 and 1902 and was also the Irish Ladies champion in 1899. The beautiful decorative golf cover has a spine design that matches the book Taylor on Golf, which was also published by Hutchinson and Co. in London. There are 33 photos within the book of other famous woman players of the time, Including Francis Griscom of Merion. There is also a great period photo of a woman playing out of a treacherous bunker at County Down ( now Royal County Down and Golf Digest’s number 1 rated golf course in the world). This book makes an important and handsome addition to your collection of “golf book firsts” and significant womens’ golf books.
