1899 St. Augustine Golf Club 2nd Place Trophy Tankard Won by LR Marshall
"It is not everywhere that enthusiastic golfers can indulge in their favorite pastime during the winter months, but in the Ancient City the weather is just right and the lovers of the sport are having lots of fun. Numerous prizes are offered for this season, including one for the best score for gentlemen on the links during the season, and one for the best score for ladies. In addition there will be weekly and monthly prizes both for men and women," St Augustine Golf Club was advertised with a letter to the editor in the March 1898 issue of The Golfer. The sparkling review was warranted for the course on the water in the cobblestone city that remains a top tourist destination in northern Florida. Organized in 1895 and incorporated in 1898, this 1899 dated lot contains surely one of the earliest trophies in existence from the oldest city in United States (1565). The article from a year prior goes on to say, "The grounds are enclosed and located in a most beautiful portion of the city, not five minutes distant from the prominent hotels. There are nine holes, the distance between each being from 170 to 330 yards, with bunkers, hazards and; everything complete." This tankard trophy was presented to worthy recipient LR Marshall for his runner-up finish at the club in 1899.
