1899 Brookline The Country Club 'The Thomas Challenge Cup' Memento Won by J.G. Thorp
This lot presents an impeccable trophy from The Country Club that stands 5 1/2" tall with a maximum width of 7 1/4". The Country Club golf course was built in 1893 and was the site of the first United States Open. From 1896 to 1916 the head professional there was Alex Campbell, who we have to thank for the development of Francis Ouimet from caddie into championship golfer. Front reads:
