Wearing each of his Open Championship medals proudly pinned to his jacket, JH Taylor is positioned next to the elevated iconic claret jug trophy, and iron tucked under his arm in this incredible professional posed studio cabinet card portrait photo from a private collection dated 'MAY 1896.' Three more like medals would come in due time, 1900, 1909 and 1913. Likely JH Taylor's favorite image, later notated 'JH aged 25' in ink, this original is surely ours of the eventual 5-time Champion Golfer of the Year - an image most have not even seen. Zoom in on the accompanying lot photos of this clear cabinet card and detailing is able to be made out, from the hairs on Taylor's mustache to some of the engraving on his medal hit by the light source just right. A member of The Great Triumvirate, the original "Big 3," with Harry Vardon and James Braid, Taylor would win his incredible 5th and final Open Championship title over the defending champion Ted Ray by 8 strokes. The photographic marvel's origin story traces back to Henry W. Salmon photography studio formally of 77 High Street in Winchester, United Kingdom. Its stylized branding found just embossed below the image on the thick cabinet card, along with diagonally across the verso of this cabinet card as well.
