1892 'Golf' Tom Morris & Willie Park at St Andrews Etching By W.G. Stevenson and Etched By C.O. Murray
Some of golf's most historic figures were depicted at its most historic venue St Andrews in this highly detailed and textured golf scene by W.G. Stevenson and etched by Charles O. Murray before the turn of the century in 1892. Accompanied by the likes of Old Tom Morris, Willie Park Jr and Sr, Horace Hutchinson, soon-to-be Prime Minister Arthur Balfour, John Ball, Hugh Kirkaldy, J.E. Laidlay, and others, Willie Fernie (Champion Golfer of the Year in 1883) is at the top of his swing at St Andrews in this etching. Titled simply 'Golf', there are 19 figures in the foreground, additional gallery members lined up just behind in the middle-ground and the St Andrews, and the Scotland city scape in the background. Many of those are identified in the below margin, including the aforementioned. The original 1892 piece was painted by Stevenson and this etching was carried out by Murray as previously mentioned. It is framed tastefully to 29 1/2" x 20 3/4."
