1889 Royal Blackheath Golf Club The Penn Cup Sterling Silver Medal Won by E. F. Stylecote

Royal Blackheath is considered by many to be the oldest golf club in the world, established in 1608. John Penn was the Royal and Blackheath Golf Club Captain in 1881 and 1882, the namesake for the Penn Cup in which this intricate medal was awarded to E. F. Stylecote for in 1889. Royal Blackheath Golf Club was instituted in 1608 and while it is England's first, is still looked at as one of the premier United Kingdom clubs. The date of origin and the club's coat of arms can be viewed on one side of the medal and a shallow relief depiction of The Penn Cup trophy on the verso, each contain the engraving of "E.F. Stylecote 1889" below the raised illustration of the prize and name of 'The Penn Cup.' Diameter is 1 1/4". Written below the Royal Blackheath Golf Club is Vi Arte Et Instituted 1608. Highly intricate with exceptional detail is this early ovular medal from the historic Royal Blackheath Golf Club. 2" 34 grams

Ralph H. Martin Collection

Highly accomplished business professional Ralph H. Martin started as a rocket scientist for the US military, then being an officer with the Naval Reserve in WWII prior to going on to be an engineer and executive. He was deeply passionate about golf with six holes-in-ones to his name and the astute collection with focus categories of antique golf clubs, silver, prints and books. The High School Valedictorian Martin was a member of more than five golf clubs including: the Willoughby Golf Club of Stuart, Florida and The Ridge Club of Sandwich, Massachusetts, with previously holding memberships at the Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo, Florida; the Card Sound Golf Club, Key Largo, Florida; the Hartford Golf Club, West Hartford, Connecticut; and the Canoe Brook Country Club, Summit, New Jersey. Shooting his age on several occasions, he was a member of the Southern Seniors Golf Association and had a fine eye for patent clubs and the equally coveted 'long-noses' dating back decades into the 19th century. It is with The Golf Auction's honor that we share Martin's collection of hand-chosen pieces with the collecting public, such as the one in this lot.
