1870 Royal Blackheath Golf Club Autumn Meeting 2nd Prize Medal

This is one of the earliest medals we have handled at The Golf Auction. The medal features a blue ribbon with a long stick pin in the rear attached to two crossed clubs, a long nose, and an iron. The clubs are encircled with a banner the reads “Vi Et Arte” which is the Latin club motto that translates to “Strength and Skill”. Below the clubs the front of the medal has a wreath surrounding two crossed clubs with depictions around the clubs of a crown, a thistle, two balls and a figure with the St. Andrew cross. Surrounding the wreath are 4 triangular extensions with the initial’s “R” “B” “G” and “C” for Royal Blackheath Golf Club The back of the medal is inscribed: “Autumn Meeting, 2nd Prize, Given by S. Smith, Captn 1870.” Stephen Smith was the Blackheath Club Captain in 1870. It is hard to understate the rarity of a 154-year-old golf medal like this. It would be a prize possession for a golf medal collector and we wouldn’t be surprised to find a similar medal located in the Blackheath golf museum itself.3 1/2" x 1 3/4"
