1850 'The Golfers: Grand Match Played Over St. Andrews Links' by Charles Lee Original Engraving - Rare!
It was likely the most important golf painting that was ever done, The Golfers: Grand Match Played Over St Andrews Golf Links' by Charles Lee. Less than 100 original engravings were said to have been created from it. How many of those from nearly 175 years ago survived? Not many. We can't overstate how rare this piece is. Fine original engraving by Charles E. Wagstaffe of the oil painting by Charles Lees. Printed by W. Wolding, Edin. The work shows a moment captured from the 1841 Royal & Ancient annual meeting. The scene depicts the encounter between Sir David Baird and Sir Ralph Anstruther playing against Major Playfair and John Campbell. Dozens of other well known golfers can be identified by the key made at the time of painting. The original painting by Charles Lees was finished in 1847 and measured 4'3"x7'. Three years later, as presented here, Charles Wagstaff's black-and-white line engraving was published by Alexander Hill in 1850. Some prints were then colored. This is the finest condition example in existence, recently professionally cleaned to restore paper to original white it was produced on in 1850! This was not one of the many rounds of prints done decades later. Framed tastefully to not take away from the stunning, historical golf art soon to gain entrance into an elevated collection in search of this - its new centerpiece!
