1842 Original Musselburgh Golf Club Advertisement - Possibly World's Oldest Poster
As a call of attention to all 'Captains & Members of the Edinr. & Musselburgh Golf Clubs' this 1842 original poster is not only a very early golf related promotional effort, but perhaps the world's oldest poster! With select words in varying size, jet black ink invites golfers to the theatre and box office for a Wednesday Evening, October 19th benefit showing of the Susan Hopley - The Maid Servant. Luring the golfing target market from the prestigious nearby clubs it is advertised that Mr. S. Cowell, of whom the benefit is for, will sing "The Golfer's Garland," in character. This will be attended by his caddy. Musselburgh had been the sight of golf on the links since 1672, originally over seven holes. After fulfilling its promotional duties, this paper poster was saved and preserved to the good condition with expected edging paper loss and a break in the top.
