1812 Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society Monthly Meeting Invitation Pamphlet - Mr. Adam Longmore
This hand-dated and addressed document is of the earliest of golf manuscripts, from 212 years ago must be read for its exceptional historical content. It hails from Bruntsfield Links' Monthly Meeting as an extended invitation to Mr. Adam Longmore to attend. This fragile paper is of the compacting size 4" x 6 5/8" when folded and 4"x13 1/4" when expanded, how it is professionally presented here. Edinburgh's Bruntsfield Links, about an hour away from the Old Course at St. Andrews, is the 4th oldest golf club in the world.
The 1865 'Black's Guide to Edinburgh' 1st Edition by Adam & Charles Black discusses the early, premier golf club of Brunstfield Links. "...Bruntsfield Links (Downs), where golf and other games are played. The game of golf is played with a club and ball. The club is formed of ash, flexible and finely tapered, measuring from three to four feet long, according to the player's height or length of arm. The head is faced with horn and loaded with lead. The ball is about the size of a common tennis ball, made of gutta percha. The game consists in striking the ball successively into a certain number of small holes, about a quarter of a mile apart, the player who does so in the smallest number of strokes being the victor. Each player carries an assortment of clubs varying in elasticity, and thus adapted to the distance the ball is to be drive, the best club for a long stroke being laid aside for one less elastic, when the distance becomes shortened. An expert player will stroke a ball from 130 to 200 yards. The principal Golf Clubs are the Burgess, Bruntsfield Links, and the Warrender, each of which has its arms and crest, and particular uniform." The custodians with aspirations of curating the finest pre-20th century golf collections with a focus on the United Kingdom clubs need to take a serious look at this worthy inclusion. 13" x 11"
