Lot #2: Tiger Woods Signed 2000 PGA Championship Tournament Flown 17th Hole Flag JSA #YY72966

Description

Tiger Woods Signed 2000 PGA Championship Tournament Flown 17th Hole Flag JSA #YY72966

Flown on hole 17 of Valhalla for the third leg of the 'Tiger Slam,' the 2000 PGA Championship, is this actual tournament-used flag taken off the stick following the on-course firework finale of Tiger Woods vs. Bob May. A reference photo of this flag during the tournament has been added to this lot! Hole 17, or "Straight Up" as its now called, proved highly significant during the final round that Sunday - and again during the 3-hole playoff! Woods converted a birdie putt on the par 4 in regulation and drew even with May before the 72nd hole. A pair of clutch putts to remain all square gave the patrons some "free golf." The playoff was on 16, 17 and 18. Both golfers would par the 17th this time (2nd playoff hole) and Woods would keep his one stroke lead gained on the first playoff hole going into 18 where Tiger received a miraculous bounce back into safety after a wayward tee shot. Two pars later and the instant classic was complete. This yellow screen-printed flag with the navy blue '17' along with 'PGA Valhalla 2000' and '82nd PGA Championship' carries a flawless time-period signature perfectly positioned. Coming from the same individual with tournament ties who obtained it 24 years ago, this Tiger-winning major championship 'Tiger Slam' used flag carries welcomed signs of usage included light blemishing just above the 'PGA Championship" underlining text and multiple spots along the fabric covering the previously mounted plastic tube insert.

“I knew that (Tiger) was good, but I had never played with him in a tournament before,” Jack Nicklaus said during a televised interview after the second round of the 2000 PGA Championship at the course he designed. “And he is so much better than I thought he was. It just absolutely amazed me.” A slugfest took place between the undisputed heavyweight champion, defending his PGA title and on the brink of a major three-peat, and the unlikely couldn't-miss journeyman Bob May, whom Tiger Woods knew from junior golf in California a decade prior. It would be in dramatic fashion as Tiger and eventual runner-up Bob May were tied after 72 holes at a tournament record 18-under par, and it took a three-hole playoff for Woods to earn his fifth Major championship for his third leg of the 'Tiger Slam.' Woods had won the 2000 US Open and British Open, and would go on to win the following major, 2001 Masters. Tiger was the first golfer to win three Majors in a calendar year since Ben Hogan did so in 1953. The coffee table was full of major championship winner's trophies for Woods, won consecutively. This is the only Tiger Woods signed, tournament-used flag from the 'Tiger Slam' that we have ever offered - the scarcest of Tiger Woods pin flags. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their FULL letter of authenticity #YY72966 comes with this lot.
