'Welcome - PGA Golf Visitors" Yellow & Blue Flag with Grommets from 1952 Championship
Hidden from the sun and preserved nicely to a similar condition to which it was hung at the Professional Golfers Association of America Championship in 1952 at Big Spring Country Club in Louisville, Kentucky nearly 70 years ago is this piece of ephemera, prominently displayed to welcome that week's spectators who were eager to watch their favorite golfers in person. Jim Turnesa, of the famous golfing family, would win by the slimmest of margins in the final match against future PGA Champion Chick Harbert that week. Similar to an advertisement, this banner was meant to attract the eyes of each individual that walked through the golf club gates, with royal blue lettering on a golden background. Each letter is individually sewn on the oversize banner, making this likely one of the few surviving examples and especially in this excellent condition.
