1931 US Open Championship at Inverness Contestant Badge - Billy Burke Winner
Depression era contestants badge from the 1931 U.S. Open. This badge from a member of that day's field displays in good condition with overall wear around the whole badge. The green/gold enamel which encircles, the prominent USGA lettering, remains mostly legible over the years, as it reads "National Open July 2 To 4, 1931". The badge was manufactured by the Whitehead & Hoag Co. Newark, NJ and this is stamped on the reverse of the badge which still carries the original issued clasp. In 1931, Billy Burke survived two 36-hole playoffs to claim the hard fought National Championship by one stroke. With only a field of 144 contestants, how many of these have survived to this day? With original surface intact, the badge exhibits good display quality. 1 1/2" is the badge measurement.
