1923 Wire Photo Francis Ouimet beat Cyril Tolley in British Amateur at Royal Cinque Ports GC
A classic 1923 wire photo of Francis Ouimet is offered in this lot. The 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" photo shows Ouimet at the 1923 British Amateur at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club, where he would beat Cyril Tolley in a match that earned his way to the Semifinals. Ouimet would finish in the top-10, but lost in a later round of match play. Roger Wethered would win the 1923 British Amateur. Francis Ouimet was regarded as one of the greatest amateur golfers in history, before the great Bobby Jones. The two played in several close matches during the 1920s, before Jones would take over as the most dominant amateur, or golfer in general, during the time. Ouimet won the 1913 U.S. Open and the 1914 and 1931 U.S. Amateur Championships. He was inducted into the inaugural World Golf Hall of Fame class in 1974. The photo is in good condition and the reverse side has some pencil notes and markings, along with a short description of the photo.
