In good spirits, lying in a hospital bed just 24 hours removed from capturing the 1922 US Open title, Gene Sarazen had just undergone surgery for Appendicitis. This close shot of the smiling, young Gene Sarazen from over 100 years ago is stamped on the verso 'October 12, 1922' by NEA and captioned with the following: 'Gene Sarazen American Open Champion Convalescing after Operation: Gene Sarazen, who underwent an operation for apendicitis twenty four hours after he has defeated Walter Hagen, is rapidly recovering. Gene declares that he will soon regain the form that won him the highest honors ever attained by a golfer. Gene is shown in bed with his customary smile very much to the fore." 8 x 6." A signed letter of provenance from Mary Ann Sarazen will come with this lot.
