John (JN) Gray Circa 1860-65 Track Iron -- One Of The Preeminent Iron Makers

A track iron crafted by John Gray a founding member of Prestwick Golf Club and a local blacksmith, who would apply his common JN Gray stamp to his work as seen on this offering. This small headed club with concave face lending to a hooked appearance, heavy in nature was used for hitting the ball out of cart tracks and similar depressions. The dents in the head show that this track iron club has been put to stern use. An outstanding club to illustrate terrain of early Scottish courses which would form the origins of the game in the 1800's. John Gray rut irons are quite rare and seldom offered for sale.
