Charles 'Chick' Evans Handwritten 1928 US Open Preview Titled '286' (His Record 1916 US Open Score) - Significant Content
With a score of 286, Chick Evans won the 1916 US Open while setting a record that would stand for 20 years. His prediction written and detailed on the three lined pages in this lot was that it would be broken in 1928 US Open at Olympia Fields Golf Club. "Ever since the (US Open) championship was awarded to Olympia I have feared that my old record would be broken. Anyway 12 years is the length of time any record should stand." He goes on to say "As a matter of fact it is wrong to call it a record because all courses different but championships are always awarded to the stiffer courses. Anyway it is the lowest score that has ever won the event and because of the above belief, I have thought this title might be appropriate for the magazine..." Content does not get more interesting than this, a (then) USGA US Open champion and record holder in Evans talking about his record score and its lasting power.
Charles "Chick" Evans was regarded as one of the best amateur golfers of his generation and a better iron-player than any of the professionals during his time. His many accomplishments include being the first amateur to win the Western Open in 1910 and the first amateur to win the U.S. Open as well as the U.S. Amateur in the same year. Possibly aiding in his accomplishments, Evans had some personal philosophies that he would abide by. One being "I made a rule never to swing a golf club except to hit a golf ball, for I had learned that one could swing beautifully when the ball wasn’t there, and poorly when it was".
