'To The Society of Golfers at Blackheath' Engraving Print by Abbott - Framed

The original “To the Society of Goffers At Blackheath” was based on a painting by Lemuel Francis Abbott (1760-1802) and was issued by Valentine Green as a Mezzotint print, circa 1790. It is one of the first golf portraits ever published, and the Blackheath golf course depicted in the print was a primitive five-to-seven-hole golf affair, its members being wealthy merchants. This version was printed by Vicars Brothers, 12 Old Bond Street, London and executed in 1915, , in the lower right hand corner. The subject is William Innes, Captain of the Society of Golfers at Blackheath, England in 1778. The original engraving was produced in 1790, which is the first print ever published depicting golf.
