1948 Bobby Locke's Masters Tournament Gift -Ashtray Depicting the Par 5 13th Hole Azalea
A special offering in this lot comes in the form of the 1948 Masters Tournament player gift depicting the hole known as Azalea, Augusta National Golf Club's Par 5 13th hole. This treasured keepsake designed by Black,Starr & Gorham Inc. (as seen on reverse engraving)which was presented by the club as a gift to Bobby Locke for his participation in the '48 event, presents in top unpolished condition (please note some age related concerns which can easily be corrected if so desired on underside). This was the third installment of a yearly tradition began in 1946 of presenting a gift to each of the contestants in the invitational event. Next to the assembling of a run of tickets/badges from each of the Masters tournaments the collecting of each of the player gifts awarded has become a favorite among advanced Masters collectors. This ashtray etched with highest detailed design has become a true lynchpin of completing this collection. Making this lot even more appealing is that it originates from the collection of Hall of Famer Bobby Locke regarded as one of if not the greatest putters in the history of the game. In recognition of Locke's great skill with the flat stick it was said, "he could makea 60 footer downhill over peanut brittle!!". The 1948 event saw Locke go 71-71-74-75 to notch a tenth place finish. The South African will always be recognized for his domination of a decade of British Open play winning four times (1949,50,52,57). In Locke (whose name is clearly engraved A.D. "Bobby Locke" by the Augusta National on the lower part of this prized keepsake), you have most likely the biggest star whoose 1948 Masters players gift will ever be available to collectors.
