Walter Travis Signed 1913 American Golfer Letterhead Letter - October 23rd
Four-time major champion Walter Travis (d.1927) is one of the toughest World Golf Hall of Fame signatures to obtain. With this signature on the bottom of his letterhead concluding a typed note of appreciation. Travis was born in Australia and moved to New York City as a 23-year old in 1886 for a position at McLean Brothers and Rigg hardware exporters that were primarily based in his home country 'down under.' He became a naturalized US citizen in 1900, the year he won his first of three US Amateur championships and four prior his British Am triumph. This letter interestingly enough thanks the publishing company for its new English dictionary, likely an aid for his golf writing. It is framed tastefully not just an exemplary signature specimen from Travis, but one with an accompanying story behind it. "I am in receipt of your favor of 20th inst., also the copy of your new standard Dictionary of the English language, and for which I beg that you will accept my thanks. Faithfully yours, Walter Travis." James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity comes with this lot.
