Robert Simpson Hickory Club - Carnoustie
Robert (Bob) Simpson, is one of the greatest club makers of all time, he arrived in Carnoustie in 1883 to take up the position of professional at the Dalhousie Golf Club, and, as well as attending to the needs of the members, was encouraged by the Club to further his activity in club making. This decision unleashed the talents of the most prolific, inventive and artistic club maker known. His design and manufacturing in his Carnoustie workshop changed the face of club making for all time. It is the extreme pleasure of The Golf Auction to offer in this lot the club crafted for Freddie Tait, the British Amateur champion of 1896 and 1898. Tait used this R. Simpson driver to win the 1898 Amateur, and gave his testimonial to their quality in early catalogs. The driver was housed in the Woking Golf Club for over seventy years. The number "21" on the face is an inventory identification. The shaft stamp is a circular oval (dates to late 1890's) containing the 'R. SIMPSON, MAKER, CARNOUSTIE" moniker.
