R.A. Whitcombe's 1935 Great Britain Ryder Cup Team Gold Medal

Advanced collectors in the elevated medals and awards space recognize this prize as perhaps among the rarest and most significant of items presented. This is one of only three that have been made available to the public, presented to the Great Britain team members. This gold tone medal was awarded to R.A. Whitcombe, who would go on to be runner-up at the 1937 Open Championship, and then win the 1938 Open Championship. His two older brothers Ernest and Charles were also professional golfers and all three played together for Great Britain in the 1935 Ryder Cup. Signifying golf royalty, 'R.A. Whitcombe' was engraved on the scroll below the profile relief depiction of Gov. Harold G. Hoffman. In only the fifth playing of the Ryder Cup, the United States Team regained the cup with a victory over the British Team at Ridgewood Country Club in New Jersey. The award's name, Harold G. Hoffman was elected to Governor of host state New Jersey shortly before the 1935 Ryder Cup. Medals like the presented R.A. Whitcombe's 1935 Ryder Cup medal is now available to the public. Measures 1" Diameter.
