Player Aubrey Boomers' 1927 Ryder Cup at Worcester PGA Reception Committee Badge - Inaugural Match

This rare badge comes directly from the family of 1927 participant Aubrey Boomer. After being in the family for the past nearly 95 years, the only actual player item from the 1927 event is presented for you now.

"Drama, tension, incredible golf, camaraderie and sportsmanship are served in equal measure, captivating an audience of millions around the world. It’s an event that transcends sport, yet remains true to the spirit of its founder, Samuel Ryder," the official Ryder Cup states when describing the modern day biennial matches. Long before "millions around the world" were able to take in the events was The Ryder Cup's first playing at the Worchester Country Club in Massachusetts. The 'friendly' matches signified on this very difficult Reception Committee badge signifies that with a simple colored illustration of a hand from either side shaking hands. The United States under the tutelage of Walter Hagen would make sure it was anything but that, on the scoreboard at least - defeating the British Team by a score of 9 1/2 to 2 1/2.

British player Aubrey Boomer and others contributing as part of the 'Metropolitan P.G.A. Reception Committee Ryder Cup Team' would be issued this elegant and very scarce badge consisting of a green ribbon as a backdrop for the intricate name bar, shaking hands hanging bar and perhaps most importantly crossing flags from each side of the isle of the newly formed international team event - United States and Great Britain. 'Aubrey Boomer' name card is in the name bar, following the white paper with black type insert design that was used for these badges. Expenses were not spared as the intricate badge for the reception of the very first Ryder Cup was needed to be a great success. It would be the end of the roaring twenties, with The Great Depression then coming sooner than most had anticipated. Locating and obtaining material from the very first Ryder Cup remains one of the most difficult tasks in golf collecting, with a single bidder finally able to have representation spot as this relic finds a new home of great appreciation. This badge comes with a signed letter of provenance from Christine Boomer.
