Original 'Francis D. Ouimet Wins United States Open - 1913' by Leland Gustavson Historical Watercolor

Here is the original 'Francis D. Ouimet Wins United States Open - 1913' that was used for the series of prints 'Golf in America' as well as 'The Golf Channel's' Francis Ouimet documentary. The men under the umbrella were painted on a separate piece of paper, then cut out from the original piece they were painted on and adhered to the watercolor with Francis Ouimet mid-swing, giving it a layering that wouldn't end up showing in the prints. The hat of the young boy has paint that overlaps from the original layer onto the second (background). There are pencil markings on the light blue hue of the sky of where Gustavson estimated the second layer would and should be placed on it. The framed piece measures 28 1/4" by 33 3/4," with the piece itself 17 1/2" by 23 1/2."

Held at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts Francis Ouimet did the unthinkable by winning the tournament as a 20 year-old amateur over Harry Vardon. This piece captures the intrigue of the story, from the perspective of the gallery that week. The reverse side has a thumbnail of the painting, with an explanation of the content and the initial game plan for reproduction. A letter of from PGA Historian Bob Denney will accompany this lot.
