Original 1934 Type 1 Horton Smith 'All Smiles' Wins Masters News Service Photo PSA #84898873

There's a first for everything - and two in this photo! This Type I photographically depicts the very first Masters Tournament and it's very first champion Horton Smith confirming the monumental triumph with a pencil in one hand and the winning scorecard in the other! 'All Smiles' describes Smith on the wood log bench in this "victory photo," not Tiger with a putter in his hand, but like many aspects of The Masters - the 'Tradition Unlike Any Other' has changed over the last nearly 90 years while also staying the same. Smith would not receive a green jacket, trophy or even a medal at the conclusion of the 1934 Masters, but a check containing the cumulative funds after a passing of the hat from ANGC member to member. Nonetheless, Bobby Jones had pulled it off! He constructed his dream course and the tournament in which would gather the top golfers on it. Used for media outlets nationwide covering Bobby Jones' first tournament on the course, this photo is touched up ever so slightly as they often were for lights and darks contrast in the newspaper including Smith's sweater outline and of course framing Smith himself. 6" x 8." PSA/DNA has encapsulated and graded this first generation photo as a 'Type I' for optimal both preservation and presentation.

Verso caption reads in type: "Horton Smith's Winning Smile - Horton Smith of Missouri, proved himself a real champion in the final day's play of the Masters' Invitation golf tournament at Augusta, GA., March 25, when he won first prize on sinking four-foot putt on the home green after being hard pressed by Craig Wood on Deal, N.J., who finished second, one hole behind. Here's Smith smiling with pleasurable relief as he carded 72 in the final round for a total of 284 stroked for the 72 holes. Bobby Jones, who returned to competition in this tournament, tied for 13th place with Desmore Shute and Walter Hagen.
