1897 US Amateur at Chicago Golf Club Trophy Pitcher Won by Champion H.J. Whigham

Sterling Silver Overlay reads as follows: United States Amateur Championship - Preliminary Medal Round - Second Prize - Chicago Golf Club - September 14, 1897 - Won by H.J. Whigham. The early champion of United States golf, Whigham claimed the 1896 U.S. Amateur title (second ever contested), and would repeat the honor in 1987 after match play was completed at Chicago Golf Club. This U.S.G.A. event brought the top golfers of the day from the East to compete against top players of the West with the weeks play commencing with a medal 36 hole round to establish the 16 contestant draw for the first round in the ‘97 Amateur Championship. It was in this medal round that the trophy offered here was awarded. Claimed by H.J. Whigham with a score of 177, only bested by his father-in-law C.B. Macdonald with 174. Pre - 1900 golf championship awards of any kind from any course and any event are incredibly rare and desirable, this particular example is not only drop dead gorgeous, it is also one of the precious few time period Major championship of the era awards to have been offered. A significant piece of United States Golf Association and it’s earliest founding member club Chicago Golf’s history, matched only by its incredible condition.
