Horton Smith's 1960 Ben Hogan GWAA Comeback Player of the Year Trophy by Henry Vanwa
This lot contains a significant piece of golf memorabilia that was owned and awarded to the first and third Masters Tournament Champion, Horton Smith. This item has never been made available to the public, until now. As many know The Golf Auction and PGA REACH have been able to partner up to offer items that have either been on display or behind lock and key of the PGA of America. This 1960 Ben Hogan GWAA award was presented in January of 1961 at the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association Dinner and was Smith's personal trophy for the award. Along with this lot comes the standing paper name plate that was used for display by the PGA of America for this trophy. Horton Smith was head pro at Detroit Golf Club at the time of the awarding and had survived two major operations, while surviving through Hodgkin's disease. There are remnants of adhesive that was on the front of the award that may have contained Smith's nameplate.
Recipients of this award include some of the most important golfers in the history of the game. After presented for the first time to Babe Zaharias in 1954, this award has been given to notables President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Horton Smith and most recently Tiger Woods this year, 2019. Ben Hogan Golf Writers Association Of America Trophy was established in 1953 by Robert A. Hudson. It is awarded to the golfer that makes the greatest comeback from a physical disability. This in turn inspires others to 'keep swinging.' Artist Henry Vanwa was responsible for creating the design of Ben Hogan's likeness. This brass trophy is dated 1953 and stands on a wooden base to total 17" tall. This trophy has been preserved to remain in excellent condition . A letter of from PGA Historian Bob Denney will accompany this lot.

AUCTION CLOSING RULES:
This auction will end at 9:00pm EST Sunday, June 16th (Father's Day) with EXTENDED BIDDING to follow. All items that have received multiple bids in the auction will remain open until no items have received a bid within a 15 minute time period (at 10pm EST, the countdown clock will be adjusted to a 5 minute interval)
1. You must place your initial bids BEFORE extended bidding begins in order to bid on the item in extended bidding
2. During extended bidding, you are allowed to bid only on items you PREVIOUSLY placed a bid on.
3. All lots that are active in extended bidding will close at the same time, and those with only ONE or NO BIDS will close at 9pm EST
