Chick Evans Signed 1970 Letter to Jim Chapin on Sidney Wanzer Letterhead with Envelope
Charles "Chick" Evans was regarded as one of the best amateur golfers of his generation and a better iron-player than any of the professionals during his time. His many accomplishments include being the first amateur to win the Western Open in 1910 and the first amateur to win the U.S. Open as well as the U.S. Amateur in the same year. Possibly aiding in his accomplishments, Evans had some personal philosophies that he would abide by. One being "I made a rule never to swing a golf club except to hit a golf ball, for I had learned that one could swing beautifully when the ball wasn’t there, and poorly when it was". In this lot is a letter to Jim Chapin from Chick Evans. The letter reads as follows:
Dear Jim:
This year will mark the 8th Annual Golden and Silver Seniors Shoot Your Age Championships which have been successful only from the fine efforts of friends like you. It is because of my promise to the late John B. Ferguson Jr. to keep it going that I, not in such good health, try to do the best I can. I have been a great believer in golf for the pep and energy it gives us for other things. My nearing 80 is proof and I love the game even more today than ever before.
Enclosed please find statement dues for the year 1970. May you continue to support it.
The Great Event will be held once more at beautiful park Ridge Country Club the first week in October where I hope we can look into each other's faces before the end of the trail and enjoy the finest party ever held in Senior Golf.
Sincerely yours,
Chick Evans
