1939 Masters Sunday Final Round Ticket #98 - Seldom Seen Ticket Adverse Weather!

As the weather channel so well advertises their programming, "Weather is known to alter history," no more accurate statement can be made when it applies to collecting Masters tickets, in particular the paper badges which were used by the Augusta National from 1934-39. The sixth tournament in this historical spring ritual was contested in 1939, and was adversely affected by terrible weather from the get-go with the first round being postponed until Friday, and Saturday's second round including hail, wind and rain. These weather delays mandated a finale of 36 holes on Sunday, April 2, which was conquered in record fashion at 279 (-9) by Ralph Guldahl. His mark for low aggregate score stood until Ben Hogan eclipsed it in 1953. The point to consider here is how few of the pinkish-red tickets, condition sensitive enough due to design, survived the weather damage of the first days of competition. Then how many of the cherished final round ducats made it through the long 36 hole Sunday rounds. The answer, NOT MANY, just like the number of tickets which were even issued to begin with. After 1934, ticket sales for the Masters decreased for the next five years with the spectacle of the first year having worn off, and many fans realizing that they could simply walk onto the un-fenced course without a ticket to watch the tournament. These factors in part have helped to contribute to the scarcity of late 1930's Masters tickets. This 1939 ticket Low Number #98 retains its original string is crown shaped at the top, and comes to a tip at the bottom. Through the use of this item as an admittance source to the Masters and subsequent wear during the event (by this time Pinkerton Security teams were reviewing the crowd for the unpaid attendees) condition flaws are present. These flaws are brought to light for accuracy and do not detract from the overall excellent appearance of this ticket. Desired, seldom seen Sunday, Final Round ticket in top condition, the answer to many collector's prayers.

Please note: This auction will end at 5:00pm EST on Sunday, June 17th, with EXTENDED BIDDING to follow.
