Wright & Ditson Spring Face Cran Cleek with Shaft Stamp
Here we have a Wright & Ditson spring face cran cleek with a Wright & Ditson signature and "Cran Pat. June 8, 97" stamped on the head. James Cran was a clubmaker for Spalding who patented the cran cleek in 1897. This spring face cran cleek has a sheet of steel riveted to the hollow head, the result of which makes the head act like a spring when striking the ball. George Wright, better known as a baseball player, was responsible for bringing some of the most well known names in golf to the US in the 1890's. Wright was able to convince Albert Goodwill Spalding to leave his office work and venture into sporting goods. Wright also convinced A. H. Findlay to come to the US and put his artistic touch to a line of clubs for Wright & Ditson. Wright also played a part in the execution of the Harry Vardon exhibition in 1900.
