Rodman Wanamaker (Founder PGA Champ.) Signed 1918 NYC Police Commission Document
Offered here is an NYC Police Department Commission document from 1918 with the seldom seen and valuable autograph of Rodman Wanamaker. It measures 18" x 23" and comes in ex-mt condition with full James Spence Authentication (JSA) letter #X91823. Wanamaker was a department store magnate and had several outside endeavors, and his connection to the golf world came after he invited a group of 35 prominent golfers and leading industry representatives to a luncheon at the Taplow Club in New York in January 1916. Wanamaker hinted during the meeting that the newly formed PGA would need an annual professional tournament and offered money, trophies, and medals to form a prize fund. Months later, the first PGA Championship was played at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York. The tournament has evolved into one of golf's four Major championship tournaments, and PGA Tour golfers now compete for the Wanamaker Trophy. During World War I, Wanamaker was appointed to Special Deputy Police Commissioner in New York City, thus the document offered here signed by Wanamaker, promoting an officer to Lieutenant of the Police Reserve of the City of New York. The signature comes with a full JSA #X91823.
