1880's Eclipse Gutty Composite Golf Ball
From "The Golf Ball Book:" In 1876, Captain Duncan Stewart of England patented the "guttie composite," a mixture of gutta percha, ground cork, and metal fillings that was considered superior to the original guttie. The Eclipse, a composition guttie containing India rubber and cork, came on the market in 1885. It was effective but had a soft feel compared to other gutties, and when its makers tried to harden it, they ruined it, and it was gone by 1892."
