Jess W. Sweetser 1949 WSGA Sterling First Prize Putting Plate - Fathers

Here we have a trophy plate won by Jess Sweetser. Sweetser was one of the United States amateur stars during the 1920's. He won the NCAA Championship in 1920 and in 1922 won the United States Golf Associations Amateur Championship. He defeated his first four opponents by a total of 29 holes before beating veteran Chick Evans in the final 3 & 2. Of note in his early matches that year was a 8 & 7 beating of Bobby Jones in the semifinal. Eight times he was involved in Walker Cup matches (6 as a player, and 2 as non-playing captain) with the United States winning all eight times including the first match in 1922. This is a putting trophy from the 1949 Pater Et Filius (Latin for "Father and Son") tournament made from sterling silver. Has raised Pater et Filius Golf Tournament insignia

**THE JOHN ROTH COLLECTION**
The January Exclusive Auction features many items from the collection of John Roth (1940-2015.) John spent 25 years amassing a collection of golf memorabilia and golf antiques that would rival most of the golf museums around the globe. John had a passion for the history and nuance of the game, its traditions and the ever-changing evolution of the manufacture of its equipment. John was a member of the Golf Collectors Society, and actively participated in many of its events around the country. John was also a long-time player in the Society of Hickory Golfers’ tournaments around the country, which honor the traditions of the game by playing with antique, wooden-shafted clubs. During his lifelong participation in the two organizations, John won or placed highly in several tournaments and made many lifelong friends with whom he found camaraderie in his pursuit of all things golf. It is his family’s wish that the items that John treasured so much find loving new homes where they can continue to be enjoyed and tell the history of the sport that meant so much to their husband and father.
