Willie Park Jr Compressed Wood Brassie

This seldom seen club features an incomplete head stamp that should read "W. Parks Patent Compressed." The club face is fitted with an insert for protection and the sole has a beautiful full brass plate held in position by six screws. The rams horn sole insert and lead back weights are firmly in position and the grip is leather.

William Park Jr was born in Musselburgh in 1864, son of the famous William Park who was the first ever Open Champion in 1860. Having served time as a professional at Ryton Golf Club in Northumberland he returned to Musselburgh in 1884 when he took over the running of his father’s club making business and soon started to become known for his new club designs. In 1885 he invented the Bulger Driver and used this club during the Open Championship that year. He won the Open in 1887 and 1889. He became known as the best clubmaker during the period 1885 to 1895 he patented a number of different clubs including a Lofting iron, a Driving Cleek, a Brassie with grooves on the sole and his Bent Neck Putter. He became a very large producer of clubs with factories based in Musselburgh, Manchester, Edinburgh and London.

**THE JOHN ROTH COLLECTION**
The November Memorabilia Auction features many items from the collection of John Roth (1940-2015.) John spent 25 years amassing a collection of golf memorabilia and golf antiques that would rival most of the golf museums around the globe. John had a passion for the history and nuance of the game, its traditions and the ever-changing evolution of the manufacture of its equipment. John was a member of the Golf Collectors Society, and actively participated in many of its events around the country. John was also a long-time player in the Society of Hickory Golfers’ tournaments around the country, which honor the traditions of the game by playing with antique, wooden-shafted clubs. During his lifelong participation in the two organizations, John won or placed highly in several tournaments and made many lifelong friends with whom he found camaraderie in his pursuit of all things golf. It is his family’s wish that the items that John treasured so much find loving new homes where they can continue to be enjoyed and tell the history of the sport that meant so much to their husband and father.
