Bobby Jones Portrait by Robert Riger for Sports Illustrated 'The Five Immortals'

A portrait of Bobby Jones for Sports Illustrated by Robert Riger as part of 'The Five Immortals' is offered in this lot. The sketched portrait of Jones comes in a 15 1/2" x 21 1/2" wooden frame. Robert Riger was one of the most recognized sports photographers and illustrators; Riger used photographs taken to create real-life illustrations of athletes. In the 1960 Sports Illustrated 'The Five Immortals' feature, Riger created illustrations for baseball star Babe Ruth, boxer Jack Dempsey, tennis star Bill Tilden, football star Red Grange, and of course the great Bobby Jones. Riger was right about Bobby Jones as an immortal figure in sports, as he remains the most recognized golfer, with items signed or featuring him coveted by golf collectors. Bobby Jones was the top amateur to play, winning 13 major championships (six Amateurs and seven Opens). He was the first golfer to complete a "Grand Slam," after winning the U.S. Open, Open Championship, U.S. and British Amateur in 1930. Jones decided to retire from competitive golf after this feat in 1930, but didn't stray from the game, as he founded and was a part of the design team for Augusta National Golf Club, near his native Atlanta, and later co-founded the Masters Tournament. Bobby Jones' impact on golf is unparalleled and any Jones collector can enhance their collection with this framed portrait of the immortal Jones.

**THE JOHN ROTH COLLECTION**
The Ryder Cup Auction features many items from the collection of John Roth (1940-2015.) John spent 25 years amassing a collection of golf memorabilia and golf antiques that would rival most of the golf museums around the globe. John had a passion for the history and nuance of the game, its traditions and the ever-changing evolution of the manufacture of its equipment. John was a member of the Golf Collectors Society, and actively participated in many of its events around the country. John was also a long-time player in the Society of Hickory Golfers’ tournaments around the country, which honor the traditions of the game by playing with antique, wooden-shafted clubs. During his lifelong participation in the two organizations, John won or placed highly in several tournaments and made many lifelong friends with whom he found camaraderie in his pursuit of all things golf. It is his family’s wish that the items that John treasured so much find loving new homes where they can continue to be enjoyed and tell the history of the sport that meant so much to their husband and father.
