Margaret Browne's 1928 Portrait of Bobby Jones by Louise Merrill - 1928

A Margaret Browne 1928 portrait of the great Bobby Jones was used when artist Louise Merrill created this charcoal rendition of the iconic portrait, offered here. This 1928 portrait is framed and displays well as a vintage photograph of golf's most recognizable figure. The frame measures 11 3/4" x 13 3/4" and is in good condition, the wooden trim border has held up beautifully, while the inner liner shows some nicks. In this era, everyone admired Jones for his golf ability and charm, so it's no surprise that two artists would be compelled to create an image of Jones sitting with holding a golf club, with his bag laying at his side. Everyone knows the story of Bobby Jones, the United State's greatest amateur, winning the U.S. Amateur five times (1924, 1925, 1927, 1928, and 1930) and the British Amateur in 1930. This came at a time when amateur tournaments were considered major championships, and because of this Jones is still considered arguably the greatest player in the history of golf. Jones also won the U.S. Open in 1923, 1926, 1929, and 1930 and the Open Championship in 1926, 1927, and 1930. Bobby Jones won the 'Grand Slam' before it was a thing in 1930. Jones' impact on golf went much further than his greatness as a player, as he is one of the founding members of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament. This lot is a great opportunity for collectors to claim a remarkable framed 1928 portrait of the great Bobby Jones.

**THE JOHN ROTH COLLECTION**
The Ryder Cup Auction features many items from the collection of John Roth (1940-2015.) John spent 25 years amassing a collection of golf memorabilia and golf antiques that would rival most of the golf museums around the globe. John had a passion for the history and nuance of the game, its traditions and the ever-changing evolution of the manufacture of its equipment. John was a member of the Golf Collectors Society, and actively participated in many of its events around the country. John was also a long-time player in the Society of Hickory Golfers’ tournaments around the country, which honor the traditions of the game by playing with antique, wooden-shafted clubs. During his lifelong participation in the two organizations, John won or placed highly in several tournaments and made many lifelong friends with whom he found camaraderie in his pursuit of all things golf. It is his family’s wish that the items that John treasured so much find loving new homes where they can continue to be enjoyed and tell the history of the sport that meant so much to their husband and father.
