McEwan Long Nose Mid-Spoon - Slightly Concave
A early to mid-1800s long nose mid-spoon club made by McEwan of Musselburgh is available to bidders in this lot in very good condition. The McEwan family was one of the top clubmakers dating back to as early as the 1770s, a time when feathery balls were still being played. The McEwan's were a legendary family of six club makers with this long nose most likely fashioned by Douglas (1809-1886) or Peter (1834-1895). In this time period they were operating their shop at Musselburgh. An authentic McEwan crafted club is expected to draw major interest from bidders looking to enhance their hickory club collection. The club has 'McEwan' stamped on the crown in bold fashion, displaying perfectly. The smooth grip remains intact. The face of the club is slightly curved and concave, in order to loft the ball when hit. Long nose mid-spoon clubs were used primarily to hit from grassy lies and made to provide golfers more loft on their shots. The shaft of a mid-spoon club was often made stiffer than that of a long spoon. This club is in truly remarkable shape considering its age, an excellent addition to any growing golf collection.
