July 18, 1931 Mid-Week Pictorial New York Times - Billy Burke and Wife with Trophy

Item measures 11" x 14 1/2"

Fresh off of his victory at the 1931 U.S. Open, Billy Burke is shown with his wife admiring the Open trophy on the cover of this Mid-Week Pictorial New York Times Co. publication. The July 18, 1931 publication shows some signs of wear, please reference photos. The U.S. Open would decide to reduce the playoff the length of all future playoffs to 18 holes, with Burke holding off George Von Elm in a marathon 72-hole playoff, the longest in tournament history. Before the sudden-death playoff format came into place, 36-hole playoffs were required to break ties, and after Von Elm sunk a birdie on the 36th hole to tie it, another 36 would have to be played. I guess you could say Burke won two U.S. Open championships in 1931, having played two full rounds to claim his lone major.
