June 24, 1933 Mid-Week Pictorial New York Times Co. - Johnny Goodman with Trophy

Offered here is a 1933 Mid-Week Pictorial New York Times Co. edition with Johnny Goodman holding the trophy from the 1933 U.S. Open on the cover. The Johnny Goodman story is a very interesting one that only the most ardent of golf fans know any more about other then he was the last amateur player to win the United States Open (1933). One of the few who in his youth was, "kid from the wrong side of the tracks" that went on to make a name for himself as a top amateur player. He piled up three prestigious wins at the Trans-Mississippi early on, but Johnny was not on the golfing map until he beat Bobby Jones in the first round of the 1929 Amateur at Pebble Beach. Then his crowning achievement came with his U.S. Open triumph. A 66 in the second round gave him the lead which Walter Hagen and Ralph Guldahl could not catch. He added the U.S. Amateur title to his resume in 1937. At the time he was only the fifth player with those double titles in their career (Travers, Ouimet, Evans and Jones). Item measures 11" x 14 1/2"
