F. Stranahan's 1949 Masters Contestants Gift/Souvenir-Bronze Medal W/Ribbon-Rare
Offered in this lot is the seldom seen, if ever, 1949 Masters Contestant's Gift as presented by the Augusta National as a souvenir to participants in that years Masters Tournament. With less then 100 invited players it is easy to see why these items like early contestants badges are very rare, and highly collectible. This was the fourth gift in the series which the Augusta National started gifting to players when they resumed the Masters Tournament following a three year interruption by World War II. This bronze medal measuring 1 3/8" diameter with it's original 3 3/8" ribbon (slight discoloration to ribbon) bears the name of Frank Stranahan, the 'Toledo Strongman'. This medal remains in its original state, and presents with an aged patina look of untouched bronze. The front of this treasured memento presents with raised relief of the classic Masters logo and verbiage "Augusta National Golf Club". The verso side also is fashioned in raised relief wording, "Masters Tournament 1949" with the National directly adding below this area engraving of the contestants name, in this case "Frank Stranahan". This Masters collectible, similar to the run of tournament badges but decidedly harder to locate, is a must have for the advanced collector. As outlined earlier at most 100 of these complete sets could ever be assembled, and we known in reality that number is far, far less!
