1962 National Golf Day Medal - Barber vs. Littler

The National Golf Day was instituted in 1952 by the PGA of America to promote the game and serve as a fund raiser for its charitable wing. Each of the PGA's 4,300 pros were encouraged to play that day in return for a contribution from their playing partner. This event also featured a beat the top professional of the days posted score. Golfers that were able to best the pros score received a commemorative medal. The later day medals were 1" diameter for 1962 contest and featured a competition between the reigning PGA and U.S. Open champion from the proceeding year. In the earliest years it was best the score of the U.S. Open champ with 1 1/4" diameter medal as the prize presented for the achievement. 1962 saw Jerry Barber and Gene Litler with both appearing both in their first appearances in the program. The coin as it appears in Near Mint condition is offered here some 53 years after event.
