Burke Grand Prize 20 Hickory Shaft Wood

William Burke had managed MacGregor's club-making for nearly 15 years before branching out on his own in 1910. By the late 1920s and early 1930s they were mass-producing cheap store-brand clubs, particularly the Columbia range. It is easy to overlook the quality and innovation they produced, but the fact that Jock Hutchison used their clubs, and Harry Vardon later gave them his endorsement, speaks volumes. It was their deeply grooved mashie niblick which Hutchison used to win the 1921 Open, the first "American" to win it (although he was born and brought up in St Andrews) and, when the ban on such clubs came into effect in July of that year, Jock presented the club to the R&A. Here is a Burke Grand Prize 20 Hickory Shaft Wood. Please inspect the accompanying lot photos for a detailed condition report. 43"
