1896 New York And Staten Island Golf History Sterling Trophy

"The Staten Island Cricket and Baseball Club”--as it was known at the time of its inception--was founded on the 22nd of March 1872. Now known as The Staten Island Cricket Club it still exists today. The Staten Island Cricket and Base Ball Club had a course in Livingston and was a Charter member of the Metropolitan Golf Association. This elegant sterling trophy was awarded in 1896 and is no doubt one of a limited number of 19th century United States golf trophies that still exist. Per an article in the November 1896 New York Sun there was a large field of players at the Staten Island Cricket and Base Ball Club on November 3rd “when the new links were opened by medal play”. H.N. Townsend was listed as the winner with a 101-18 low net of 83 defeating G. W. Jewett by 1 stroke. The inscription on this trophy is “Staten Island Cricket and Base Ball Club, Handicap Golf Tournament, November 3rd, 1896, First Prize, Won By, H Nottingham Townshend 101-18-83.” 6" x 3 1/4" x 6 1/2" This cup was superbly crafted by Theo B. Starr in New York and bears their stamp on the underside of the base as well as “sterling.” It is truly a historical treasure of early golf on Staten Island and New York City. Please notice that baseball on the trophy is spelled with the old two-word Base and Ball.
