c.1920's Pinehurst Golf Balls Gene Sarazen Thos. E. Wilson & Co. Cardboard Advertisement

This large 19” x 13” cardboard display (framed under glass to 22 x 16”) was created in the 1920’s to advertise Wilson Pinehurst golf balls. There is an as issued hole at the top of the sign to accommodate a string to hang it on a wall. The paper backing to the rear has an image of a box of Pinehurst golf balls affixed to it for reference. The Thomas E Wilson Company must have commissioned a very talented graphic artist to create this piece. It was meant to catch your eye when in the golf pro shop and this piece certainly does that. The colors are strong and vibrant, and the golf figures grab your eye immediately. Wilson capitalized on the fame and popularity of Gene Sarazen to endorse their Pinehurst Golf balls. His image is accurately captured and appears alongside the following quote from Gene “Record breakers for distance I play the Pinehurst exclusively.” On the bottom Wilson further states “–and Gene Sarazen drivers and brassies will help you game. Gene Sarazen was a two-time US Open Champion and was the first player to complete the Professional career Grand Slam. As a side note, it is fitting that now Gene Sarazen and “Pinehurst” are once again re- associated via the fact the new PGA/USGA World Golf Hall of Fame just opened at Pinehurst and features a display of his 1922 PGA Championship trophy and 1935 Masters Champion plaque. This is one of the most striking advertising pieces you will see and its’ unique association with both Pinehurst and Gene Sarazen make it highly collectible.
